A BRIEF HISTORY OF
THE AUSTRALIAN PLANTS SOCIETY
 WILSON PARK (BERWICK) INC.

This group began in 1993 and has grown in leaps and bounds.

We started the northern carpark garden once the Group had been formally formed, with the help of the staff at Wilson Park. There were many hours and hard work to get the garden in the present state it is today. A tremendous amount of work was done by some of the initial members of the group.

The Australian Plants Society Wilson Park (Berwick) Inc. meets on the second Tuesday of the month, February-November, at 7.45pm for 8.00pm start in the Administration Building, Wilson Botanic Park, Princes Highway, Berwick.

There are monthly speakers on topics relative to our Society, propagation nights, etc. We like to organise some garden visits throughout the year which are generally held on a Sunday.

For insurance purposes it is necessary to belong to the governing body, Australian Plants Society Victoria as well as the District Group nearest to your place of residence or of your choice. You will find a membership form on this website that provides you with the prices involved in becoming a member. Visitors are welcome at the monthly meetings held by APS Wilson Park. After the meeting we have supper and a general chat among everyone which is very informal and friendly. So do come along and see what we are all about.

A monthly Newsletter is provided for members published by the District Group, plus a Quarterly Newsletter -Growing Australian- published by APS Vic.

By belonging to both Groups gives you, as members, the right to take part in the Quarterly Gatherings that are held every quarter throughout the year. These weekends are run by the different District Groups across Victoria. There is a booking form in the newsletter -Growing Australian- each quarter that gives you the locality of the gathering. These gatherings consist of garden visits and tours of interest to native plant lovers, lunch and dinner on the Saturday with a guest speaker after the evening meal, and on the Sunday there are further garden visits usually finishing off with a barbeque lunch. Then you make your way home. These weekends are a tremendous amount of enjoyment and you make many friends and also learn about how other people grow their plants and under what conditions with the present water situation.

Our aims are to educate people in the value of using Australian Plants in their gardens, with the present day water restrictions as, once established, most survive on very little water.

Australian Plants are a haven for attracting birds seeking to feed on the nectar the flowers provide. Flowers are also very attractive in their diverse colour and form.

All Australian plants need to be pruned to keep them in a healthy and bushy plant. If no pruning is done they will, like any other plants, become woody and straggly.
