The principal functions conducted by Berwick Artists Society, and charges to members for attendance, are:
Demonstration Night
A monthly Demonstration Night, open to the general public, usually on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 7.15 to 10 pm, at the Old Cheese Factory, Homestead Rd, Berwick. $6. These are occasions where an experienced practicing artist demonstrates some aspect of painting or drawing. The subject and medium are announced in advance in the Society's Newsletter.
Members contribute goodies for a supper break halfway through the evening. A wide variety of art supply items (paints, pastels, paper, brushes, equipment etc) are available for purchase on the night.
Monthly Competition
A Monthly Competition at the Demonstration Night, at which members can show their work in an informal and lighthearted setting. The demonstrator usually judges the pictures and offers helpful comments about them.
Portrait group
A Portrait Group, at which there is an opportunity to practice this absorbing art of portraiture, with a sitter. $5. This usually meets on first Tuesdays at 1.00 to 3.00 pm at the Old Cheese Factory.
Weekly Painting Group
A weekly Painting Group on Thursdays at 10 am at the Old Cheese Factory. $5. This is a convivial occasion for painting indoors, with friendly company.
Monthly paint-outs
Monthly paint-outs at selected sites. No charge.
Art Exhibitions of Painting and Drawing
Members' formal Art Exhibitions of Painting and Drawing. There are usually two each year, held in Autumn and Spring at Narre Warren Library, Fountain Gate, open over two to three weeks.
The last-but-one held exhibition was: 2009 Spring Art Exhibition of Paintings and Drawings in November 2009.
Outings to galleries and exhibitions
During the winter months of June to August, and sometimes in other months, the Society conducts Outings to visit galleries and exhibitions. These are interesting and convivial occasions.
Newsletter
The Society publishes its own Newsletter every two months, containing a diary of up-coming events and other items. The Newsletter can be consulted at most Casey libraries. The Newsletter welcomes contributed articles from members.
Online gallery
The Society has now set up a Web Gallery at this site. Click on this link. The Gallery is active, but at the moment it is in the process of having a change of display. It is most easy to view if you have broadband.
Discounts for art supplies
Society members are offered a 10% price reduction at many art supply shops.
Local art politics
The Society also takes a keen interest in local art politics, and lobbies for improved provisions for art and artists in Casey. The Council plans to build a gallery for the exhibiting arts as part of the Casey Main Street Project at Fountain Gate, and a home for the visual arts also in Casey. We are watching these developments closely and lobbying for a good outcome. The Society also has a representative on the Casey Council's Subcommittee to recommend a masterplan for the Old Cheese Factory, which the Society hopes will become a home in Casey for the visual arts.
