About the Library
Berwick Library is a lending library which aims to present an up-to-date library service in a traditional manner.
In addition it houses a small heritage collection of original BMI books from the nineteenth century and the Casey Collection, which is a gift from the family of Lord Casey, Australia’s former Governor General.
The lending section makes about 50,000 loans a year, from a stock of over 40,000 books. The stock includes:
(i) fiction, including sections for Mystery, Adventure, Romance and Western
(ii) a substantial large print book section
(iii) a very strong collection of Australiana, including fiction, biography and non-fiction
(iv) a children’s section catering for young children through to teenage
(v) non-fiction, including a significant section on War
(vi) magazines
(vii) talking books
An excellent and full history of the Library, with information about mechanics institutes, can be found in the monograph
Richard Myers, Berwick Mechanics Institute & Free Library, A History,
published by the Library in 1999.

President: Mrs Chris Pritchard
Treasurer: Mr Graham Hughes
Secretary: Dr Edward Vaughan
