Scottish Country Dancing is known as the ballroom dancing of Scotland.
However it does vary from the Old Time & New Vogue ballroom dancing you may know.
Scottish Country Dances consist, mainly, of reels, jigs and strathspeys and they are usually performed in sets, consisting of four ladies on one side, with four men facing them, on the other side of the set. Most dances are performed in a long set formation, some are done as a square set and a few others are done in triangular sets. There are also waltzes and some other similar dances.
Scottish Country Dancing should not be confused with Highland dancing, which is, usually, performed individually and competitively, is more energetic, and requires a greater level of fitness.
Scottish Country dancing is a mentally stimulating, friendly, social form of dancing, which can be enjoyed by anyone from 8 onwards, be they singles, couples or family groups - children do need to be accompanied by an adult.
A reasonable level of mobility is required.
Comfortable clothing and light, flat shoes are all you need. Previous dancing experience is not necessary, you don't need to bring a partner and you certainly don't need to be Scottish to enjoy Scottish Country dancing.
The Berwick Scottish Country Dance Group is a not for profit, community group.
The Group has been in existence for more than 25 years, and is a very friendly group where new members are always made very welcome.
Classes are taught in a relaxed and happy atmosphere by experienced teachers who believe dancing should be fun.
Classes: Classes begin on the first Friday in March, from 8 - 10pm.
Fees: Annual Membership is $10. Classes cost $3. Tea, coffee & biscuits, after class, are provided.
Dates: Autumn social May 28th; Winter social July 23rd; Spring social September 24th; St Andrews Formal social
November 26th.
