About GreenPC
GreenPC is a not-for-profit social enterprise of Infoxchange Australia dedicated to social justice. GreenPC aims to address inequality of access to computers and the internet for disadvantaged groups and those on low incomes. GreenPC takes outdated computers and refurbishes them, furnishes them with Microsoft software then sells them at low cost to those with a Health Care Card or those that can verify they are on a low income. Organisations and individuals donate outdated computers for refurbishing. GreenPC also runs a grassroots program which supports community projects that address inequality in access to ICT.
Other organisations, such as ComputerBank, undertake similar work to GreenPC. However, Computerbank only installs generic free software called Linux and not Microsoft software. Given that Microsoft software is widely used in schools, workplaces and homes, not having this software on a computer is a disadvantage. Further, GreenPC sells laptops (which ComputerBank does not) and appears more flexible about setting a computer up to suit the client's needs, for example, upgrading video cards, installing DVD writers and virus protection, etc. GreenPC runs a free telephone helpline. GreenPC computer purchases are supported by the No Interest Loans Scheme (NILS) which is becoming more widely available in the Casey catchment.
