Citizenship Ceremony Speech

For several years CYA members have been rostered to deliver the speech at the regular Citizenship Ceremonies. Besides the speech the member also assists the mayor in making the presentation of flowers and certificates to those accepting their citizenship.

Youth Eco Challenge

In late 2006 CYA voted to take part in a pilot environmental program for young people aged fifteen to twenty five. The initial program ran till June 2007 and involved learning how to influence their family and peers to be more conscious of the environment in areas such as water usage and waste. It was a highly successful program and many news articles were written. The Department of Planning and Community Development used it as a successful community based model and invited two of the participants to present at an event with over two hundred attendees to talk about the outcomes.

The Premiers Department also learnt of the program and paid for all participants and staff involved to attend the presentation by Al Gore and to be photographed with the Premier.

The environment remains a strong focus for CYA.

Shower Head Exchanges

South East Water has partnered with CYA in running numerous shower head exchanges where residents present their Water Bill and old shower head and receive new water saving shower head free of charge.

These have been run as separate events and at local colleges.

Youth Eco Challenge Three

Youth Eco Challenge Three

In late 2009 CYA members will link up with senior members of our community to explore common concerns with the environment and for members to share what they have learnt over the two years since the initial Eco Youth Challenge.

Supporting Legacy Widows with their gardens

Supporting Legacy Widows with their gardens

During summer in 2008 Legacy approached CYA to ask if the young people could assist a group of Legacy widows with some weeding. So far there has been three sessions with plans for more in the second half of 2009 with the warmer weather. This has been a great opportunity for the two generations to have an opportunity to spend some time together and help breakdown some negative perceptions that may have existed previously.

More volunteers are very welcome!
