· Develop sustainable approaches to refractive error in children
· Develop new capacities for controlling glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy
Goal III: Provide -Vision for All- - US$50 million challenge
After reaching the first two goals, a challenge goal of an additional US$50 million will enable Lions to:
· Fund rehabilitation efforts and education for the already blind
· Invest in research initiatives at Lions Eye Research Institutes
· Expand and enhance Lions' sight programs for high-risk populations in developed countries
Campaign SightFirst II will make it possible-
Trachoma will also disappear by 2020
· If we abandon SightFirst, the world's blind population will double by 2020.
SightFirst Success
· Prevented serious vision loss for 24 million
· Provided 65 million treatments for river blindness
· Awarded US$175 million for 724 projects in 88 countries
· Restored sight to 4.6 million with cataract
· Improved eye-car services for hundreds of millions
· Built or expanded 258 eye hospitals and clinics
· Upgraded 300 eye Centres with equipment
· Trained 68,000 ophthalmologists, ophthalmic nurses, other professional eye-care workers
· Launched the world's first initiative to combat childhood blindness in partnership with the World Health Organization. Thirty pediatric eye-care Centres will be established
