In 1925, Helen Keller inspired the Lions to support the blind. At the Lions International Convention she challenged Lions everywhere to be -Knights of the Blind in the crusade against darkness-. Since that time, Lions have been committed to serving the blind and visually impaired people and equipping them with skills to live productive lives.
Australian Lions fund overseas eye camps and annually collect recycled spectacles which are delivered to Third World countries by the container load.
In the Outback regions, eye testing and the treatment of glaucoma is undertaken by clubs within Aboriginal communities.
Low Vision Clinics in most states operate for the benefit of the aged and the infirm with advanced aids to give improved vision at no cost to the recipient.
In Western Australia the Lions Eye Institute - a specially designed research and clinical facility - was opened in 1988. More than 40,000 patients are seen each year. The Institutes research programs are recognized worldwide.
