VICTORIAN LIONS FOUNDATION

 
The Foundation acts as a central coordination point for projects that involve more than one District.   There are 10 Projects currently under the -umbrella- of the Foundation.   These are:

 

Lions Eye Bank - Melbourne

A fund established to pay the running costs of the Victorian Lions Eye Bank.   The Eye Bank operates at a part of the Department of Ophthalmology of Melbourne University at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital .   The Foundation also supports CERA, the Centre for Eye Research Australia Ltd.

 

Lions Deafness Research Foundation

Supports the Lions Research Fellow at the Department of Otolaryngology, Melbourne University .   Instrumental in assisting the development of the Bionic Ear.

 

National Vision Research Institute

Lions Vision Research Fellow is funded to research problems with vision, particularly those associated with aging.

 

International Diabetes Institute

Supports the Lions Diabetes Education Wing.

 

National Stroke Foundation

Research into cause and effects of strokes.

 

Lions Village Licola

Operates as a holiday camp for disadvantaged children, elderly citizens, etc. and is available for outside hiring.

 

Lions Crimewatch

Formerly known as Speak Up, it is an awareness project involved in crime prevention programs.

 

Lions Cancer Research Unit

Assists in funding a Cancer Research Centre based at Walter & Eliza Hall Institute.   Carries out research related to tumors of the blood and lymph glands which are increasingly common, especially in young people.

 

Lions Clubs Sight & Hearing Conservation Foundation Inc.

Operates mainly in Western Victoria, it is involved in public screenings to detect diseases and anomalies of the eyes and ears, and also diabetes and abnormal blood pressure which are major causes of loss of sight and hearing.

 

LEHP - AUSTRALIA

Lions Eye Health Program - Australia is an educational program designed to increase awareness of the risks of vision loss from diabetes.

 

Membership of the Foundation

All Lions Clubs in the -V' Districts are Members of the Foundation.

Membership of the Foundation is also open to individuals, firms, corporate bodies and organizations as provided for in the rules of the Foundation.
