Narre Warren Bowls Club
RECORDS show that on 21 March 1984, the City of Berwick (later named the City of Casey) received a letter from Mr and Mrs W Wilson saying, amongst other things: ‘We have noticed over the years how the sporting area at the centre has been developed to cover the sporting needs of the younger generation of the community but what plans, if any, have you in mind for the older sporting members, ie: bowling green.’
Initially the City of Berwick adopted a cautious approach, and needed to be convinced another bowls club in the area was justified before making a commitment. At the time the Berwick Bowls Club was firmly established, and had an ‘overflowing’ membership.
Notwithstanding its cautious approach, the City of Berwick investigated two potential sites in the vicinity of the Civic Centre, and duly set aside in its 1987/88 estimates a sum of $100,000 for two greens to be established on the present site of the Narre Warren Bowls Club.
The first meeting of the Foundation Committee of the proposed Narre Warren Bowls Club was held at the home of Gwen Greentree on 29 October 1985. This committee was very enthusiastic, and set about raising funds and promoting the proposed bowls club. The Berwick Bowls Club was very supportive, and made its facilities available for fund-raising events.
The first Annual Meeting was held at the premises of the Narre Warren Cricket Club on 12 May 1987, with 52 members in attendance.
Through a considerable amount of hard work by the foundation committee and members of the new club, in conjunction with the City of Casey and the community in general, the Narre Warren Bowls Club was officially opened on 19 July 1987. City of Casey Mayor Cr John Hastie (now an active member of the club) rolled the first jack.
Since its inception, the Narre Warren Bowls Club has provided an excellent and accessible sporting and social experience for members and guests. It has been an integral part of the sporting and social fabric of the local community. Age has been no barrier to membership and participation. Nor has a disability been a barrier, and the club has, and will always, encourage people with a disability to enjoy a sporting and social life at the Narre Warren Bowls Club.
