April comes the Sinhala and Hindu New Year. The Sinhala and Hindu New year is
very much significant to the Sinhalese and Hindu Tamils of Sri Lanka. The
Sinhala Aluth Avurudda (Sinhala New Year) was celebrated in the Kandyian
kingdom of Sri Lanka as a national festival under the patronage of the Kings. This was
done in keeping with the rituals. The Astrologers worked out he auspicious times to
perform the rituals in order to bring about prosperity and happiness to the people and
Country. Sinhala Avuruddha dawns when the Sun moves from the house of Pisces to
the house of Aries completing a cycle of twelve month period. The transition time
known as -˜Sanskranthi' takes place on April 13th or 14th. It is during this period that
some of the rituals are performed. -˜SEWA' follows this tradition and organizes
a fitting ceremony.
Finally the year ends with a colorful Christmas Party.
Year dawns with an arms giving to the Buddhist priests
